September 12: Gamaka Vachana:

The students of Gr 9 and 10 were treated to an enriching art form of Karnataka, Gamaka Vachana on September 12, 2019. This traditional art of reciting the verses in ‘Hale Kannada’ (old kannada) paraphrasing the verses in modern kannada, was presented by two noteworthy, Gamakis of Karnataka-Smt. Vid. Srimathi Jayaram and Smt. Bhagyalakshmi on the Vachana (reciting) and Vyakhyana (paraphrasing), respectively. These verses are rendered taken from the classic compositions of legendary kannada poets like Kumara Vyasa, Ranna, Janna, Ponna, Bana….etc. This art requires immense knowledge of the kannada language plus strong carnatic musical background. This is because, the vachana is made using various Ragas of Carnatic music, based on the mood and context of the verse rendered.

The artists selected the verses from ‘Kumaravyasa Bharata’, an epic form of the Mahabharata in hale kannada. These verses are part of the syllabus of Gr 10, Kannada Text, prescribed by the CBSE. The verses depicted the conversation between Lord Krishna and Karna in the context befor e the Kurukshetra war. This program gave the students, who study in Gr 10, a better understanding of the verses. Besides this, all the students were exposed to this ancient art of Karnataka through these eminent artists.
